Burst-and-coast swimmers optimize gait by adapting unique intrinsic cycle

This paper addresses the physical mechanism of intermittent swimming by considering burst-and-coast regime fish at different speeds. The consists a cycle with two successive phases: phase active undulation powered muscles followed passive gliding phase. Observations real whose gait is forced in water flume from low to high speed regimes are performed, using full description kinematics and mechanics. We first show that modulate unique intrinsic sustain demanded modifying bursting coasting ratio while maintaining duration constant. Secondly, we numerical simulations chosen correspond optimized gaits over range speeds tested.
